In 2002, Life Matters Worldwide began a relationship with a pregnancy care center located in Quito, Ecuador. Salva Una Vida, which translates to Save a Life, specializes in:
Caring for women facing crisis pregnancies
Facilitating post-abortion recovery through biblical healing and counseling
Caring for men and women who have been victims of sexual abuse
Providing sexual and abstinence education to local schools and churches
Abortion is illegal in Ecuador, but an estimated 95,000 back alley abortions occur every year. This has resulted in an annual admission of 20,000 to 30,000 women to local hospitals with abortion-related complications, accounting for 18% of maternal deaths. As is the nation’s capital, Quito is on the front line of Ecuador’s debate over the sanctity of human life.
Today, Carlos and Karen Feijoo (pictured here with Life Matter's President Tom Lothamer, at right) act as Salva Una Vida’s Executive Directors. Trained as a physician and nurse, the Feijoos are using their medical knowledge to save the unborn and share the love of Jesus. Life Matters helped them obtain the ultrasound equipment that the couple uses at the facility and will continue to provide training and consultative services to this purposeful ministry.
