What does the Bible say about life?

The Bible does not use words such as 'abortion' or 'euthanasia,' but it does offer plenty of principles that inform our consciences on those matters. The issue really is, How should we treat people? Once we determine that mankind occupies a special place in the universe, it becomes paramount that we treat each other with respect and dignity.

Your word, O LORD, is eternal;
it stands firm in the heavens. —Psalm 119:89

The sum of Your word is truth,
and every one of Your righteous rules endures forever. —Psalm 119:160

God does not approve of suicide, assisted suicide, euthanasia, "mercy killing," or a "right to die."

The biblical record shows that people who killed themselves were not walking closely with God at the times of their suicides. Judges 9:54, 16:29-30; I Samuel 31:4; 2 Sam. 17:23; 1 Kings 16:18 ; 1 Chronicles 10:4-5; Matthew 27:5.

Many godly people in the Bible suffered profoundly, but did not take their lives into their own hands. Instead they entrusted themselves to God. Numbers 11:14-15; 1 Kings 19:4; Job 3:20-22, 6:8-11, 7:16, 14:5,13-14; Philippians 1:23-24.

Human dominion over creation does not extend to our being able to determine the right moment for a person to die. Ecclesiastes 8:7-8, 9:12.

None of our Bible heroes claimed a right to “bodily autonomy.” Paul wrote that our bodies belong to God and must be used in ways that honor Him. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

Dignity is innate in the human being, no matter a person's age or physical condition. We have value because we’re made in God’s image and that can never be lost, stolen, or given away. In fact, dignity is best – perhaps only – expressed in the face of suffering. The greater the suffering, the greater the occasion for dignity. As Paul discovered, we can glorify God in our suffering. 2 Cor. 12:9-10.

Suffering and loss of independence are opportunities for Christian ministry. We grow in biblical virtues as we help others who are vulnerable, weak, and dependent. Compassion is only be demonstrated when someone struggles. John 13:14-17; Acts 4:34-35; 1 Cor. 12:25-26; James 2:15-16.

Human life bears the image of God:

Genesis 1:26-28 - Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 5:1-3 - This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.

Genesis 9:1-7 - So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man. “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man. And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.”

Psalm 8:3-6 - When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet.

James 3:8-10 - No man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons, and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with blood. Thus they were defiled by their own works, and played the harlot by their own deeds. Therefore the wrath of the Lord was kindled against His people, so that He abhorred His own inheritance.

While the Bible does say unrepentant murderers will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21, 1 John 3:15, Revelation 21:8 and 22:15), He invited even those who'd killed His Son Jesus to be saved (Acts 3:14-20). Ezekiel 3:16-19 - Now it came to pass at the end of seven days that the word of the Lord came to me, saying, "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: When I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.

Zechariah 7:9-10 - Thus says the Lord of hosts: "Execute true justice, show mercy and compassion everyone to his brother. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother."

Luke 6:36 - Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

John 15:13 - Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.

John 15:16-17 - You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. These things I command you, that you love one another.

Galatians 6:1,10 - Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. . . . Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Ephesians 2:10 - For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 5:1-2 - Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

James 1:27 - Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: To visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

James 2:15-17 - If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

I John 3:17-19 - By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

1 John 4:11 - Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
