Pro-Death

NO Image:

Once upon a time not that long ago “everyone” knew with scientific certainty that human life began at conception. A mere three years after this editorial was written, “semantic gymnastics” made abortion-on-demand the law of the land. Would that pro-death people today could be as honest and forthright about their tactics.

Six truths about disability

Through ignorance and errant belief systems, people have adopted strange views toward people with disabilities:

• Pagan Greek and Roman philosophers advocated abandoning babies who were born with disabilities.

• In medieval times, children with disabilities were considered “changelings” – subhuman, Satanic beings.

• Social Darwinists and the Nazis sought to eradicate disability through eugenics and the death camps.

Thankfully, God frees us from hateful, superstitious, and deadly beliefs. His word urges us to treat the disabled person as our neighbor, to watch out for them as a brother. As it says in the law, "You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind.” (Leviticus 19:14)

Jesus, of course, fulfilled and expanded on this law. He made a point to minister to disabled people, and there are many examples of this in the Gospels. In particular, Mark 10:46-52 gives us six principles concerning them:

1. Society sidelines disabled individuals and hinders them from coming to Jesus. We should not take our cues from the world.

2. Disabled people are spiritually capable. Just as blind Bartimaeus knew who Jesus was, we must recognize that people who are disabled and follow Christ have spiritual gifts.

3. People with disabilities need Christ and fellowship with other believers. We who have no disability have a duty to help them.

4. Jesus does not pass by people with disabilities. In fact, He characterizes the people He calls into His kingdom as "crippled, blind, and lame" (Luke 14:21).

5. Jesus "empowered" Bartimaeus to articulate his own need, and we should not presume to know what a person we're

 helping needs or wants.

6. Whether our bodies are whole or not, we are broken by sin. We all need Christ, in Whom we find healing, acceptance, and purpose.

It's wonderful that the early church's immediate response was to rescue disabled infants from the trash heaps of Rome. They knew these truths and responded accordingly, even when it meant danger and self-sacrifice.

Baby parts for sale, part 4

Yesterday in the U.S. Senate a bill was defeated that would have reallocated funds from Planned Parenthood to federally qualified health centers that do not perform abortions. Like the legion that possessed the wild man in Mark 5:1-13, PP will do whatever it takes to avoid being cast out.

Few places in Scripture describe pro-death forces as profoundly and accurately as Psalm 10. Verses 8 through 11 say:

[The wicked man] lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent.

His eyes watch in secret for his victims; like a lion in cover he lies in wait.

He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.

His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.

He says to himself, “God will never notice; He covers his face and never sees.”

But the truth is, God does see what is done in secret (v. 14). He does take every human death into account, despite the unbeliever’s denial (v. 13). In view of the ridicule heaped on pro-lifers when we scrutinize PP, this emerges as a vital article of faith.

This is a fundamental principle going back to Genesis 9:5-6. At that time, God promised Noah and his offspring: "For your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind."

Three times: "I will demand an accounting." As loudly and insistently as Abel's blood cried out to God from the ground, so too does the blood of all innocents (Psalm 106:38, 2 Kings 9:26, Joel 3:21). A day of reckoning is coming.

Despite injunctions against the Center for Medical Progress, a 5th video has been released. It contains further proof against PP and disturbing footage of what remains of babies after abortion.

Yes, God has always had His eye on what goes on inside Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics. Some prefer not to watch these disturbing videos, but if we don't see AND share them, babies will continue to be heartlessly crushed by the wicked.

Scholars point to links between Psalm 9 and 10. In 9:11-12, David alludes to Gen. 9:5-6. He also reorients our perspective toward worship of a sovereign God and comforts our distress over failed efforts to defend the unborn:

Sing the praises of the Lord, enthroned in Zion;

proclaim among the nations what he has done.

For He who avenges blood remembers;

He does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.

The 4th video from The Center for Medical Progress is available, and also quite graphic. Please, don't let that stop you from viewing and sharing it.

Baby parts for sale, part 1

Thanks to investigative videos produced by The Center for Medical Progress, we’ve learned that what we thought had ceased a decade ago is still happening, and that the country’s largest abortion provider is deeply involved.

Whether or not this campaign results in Planned Parenthood’s demise, we must continue steering attention toward ultimate truths:

• It doesn’t matter if the sales are legal. The real outrage is abortion on demand.

• It doesn’t matter if Planned Parenthood is profiting by the sale of baby parts. They’ve been feeding at the federal trough for years. These are your tax dollars! We've participated by silent consent. (Calculate how much you've given them over 10 years.)

• Tax dollars also support the research that uses aborted baby parts ($76 million last year, according to the Washington Post).

• PP isn’t the only source of aborted baby parts for research, just the largest and most well-known.

• Planned Parenthood workers are people who need Christ. They are blinded by the god of this age. Hatred and vitriol won’t help the Kingdom's cause.

What will help is bookmarking the CMP website so you can access unedited versions and transcripts for skeptical friends. And educating yourself on how baby parts are used in research.

OTHER ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE

1. Pray – This fight will not be over without a struggle. PP and other pro-abortion forces are hitting back, accusing CMP of fraud and illegal activities

2. Defund PP – Bills have been presented in both houses of Congress. Read "Senate Will Vote Soon on Bill to Immediately De-Fund Planned Parenthood Abortion Biz" and then contact your U.S. Representative and Senators. You may also sign an online petition here or here, but I believe personal communication that identifies you as their constituent is more powerful.

3. Personally defund PP - Boycott companies and charities that support Planned Parenthood and fetal tissue research. Learn more here and here.

Christians are good givers. Amid the shopping frenzies of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we give as we always have to our churches, to Christian ministries, and to the less fortunate.

Giving Tuesday is about inviting friends to join you in support of favorite charities. Share this link so they can support biblical pro-life ministries that change lives.

Something else to keep in mind: Opponents of life use Giving Tuesday as a major fundraising tool. Let your giving and/or social-media sharing on December 2 make a difference for life!

Maybe you heard that Google is attacking the free speech of pregnancy care centers by dropping their ads. This may be a case of more smoke than fire, since we are aware of no centers who’ve suffered this loss. But it is one more attempt by NARAL Pro-Choice America to do what they love to do -- portray all PCCs as “deceptive.”

Here's how the story played out --

Another way to look at this challenge is to see it as proof PCCs are succeeding. Their effectiveness and very existence cause trouble for abortion clinics, whose numbers are steadily decreasing in the face of pro-life laws and their own shoddy practices. Let’s not forget who the real deceivers are! (Read this article for examples of what abortion providers are really like and how major media cover up for them.)

And let’s not forget that PCCs are non-profits that do their work with limited resources and (for the most part) volunteer labor. Centers do face the perennial challenges of securing funds and recruiting volunteers. These tasks become more difficult during the summer vacation months.

This month we host our annual Summit to strengthen and encourage them. For two days (the 15th and 16th) we bring together directors, staff, volunteers, and board members for workshops, plenary sessions, and discussion groups. They enjoy fellowship, networking, and consultation with experts in the field.

Please pray with us for this event, and for our faithful partner centers. They need to be both "wise as serpents and harmless as doves." Wise in their use of advertising and wary about the tactics of our opponents. PCCs are, by nature, harmless but perhaps they need to be more assertive about defending the integrity they do maintain.

POSTSCRIPT 5/13/14 - Turns out centers are reporting their ads being "limited" or dropped by Google and Yahoo. Some have also been "warned" by Bing. Jim Sprague, executive director of the Pregnancy Resource Center in Grand Rapids, comments:

In practical terms, this determination from Google means if someone is considering an abortion they will have much more difficulty finding a place online that truly empowers a woman to make an informed decision and (most importantly) has no financial stake in her decision.

The decision means now only the groups profiting from the procedure are allowed to purchase the ad word “abortion.” This clearly favors abortion providers and at the same time seriously restricts groups like PRC who offer life-giving alternatives to abortion.

This mindset reveals itself in statements by "pro-choice" advocates such as:

"An abortion when needed is a blessing. It is a gift, a grace, a mercy, a cause for gratitude, a new lease on life." --Valerie Tarico, Planned Parenthood Board of Advocates

“I feel like God wants me to do this job” --Diane Derzis, owner of the last abortion facility in Mississippi

Choosing abortion is "what religious liberty is about." --Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America

Why I perform abortions: A Christian obstetrician explains his choice
The Abortion Ministry of Dr. Willie Parker]

Aside from multiple references to the existence and personal characteristics of babies still in the womb (among them Genesis 16:11-12, 25:23; Luke 1:15,44), there is ample scriptural help for when we have to for decide between the competing rights of individuals. Look at what God says to slaves and masters, husbands and wives, Israelis and foreigners, rich and poor, etc. In short, the Bible is full of instructions concerning civil disputes in which one rival party is the "person" and the other generally considered "non-person."

God's word makes a strong case against treating anyone as a "non-person human being." Slaves are persons. Women are persons. Gentiles are persons. Poor people are persons. Scripture demands we treat all impartially, as persons made in God's image.

There are plenty of candidates for what is being called "non-person status" recorded in Scripture, but no allowance is granted for their mistreatment. The unborn child is, therefore, a worthy candidate for protection.

Last week, President Obama closed an address to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America with these words:

“Thank you, Planned Parenthood. God bless you. God bless America.”

We can understand why he would thank them, having received from them substantial campaign contributions (over $4 million), but an invocation of blessing is hard to swallow. This group is the largest abortion provider in the nation.

You can read more about the triangulation of Obama, Planned Parenthood, and the scandal of Kermit Gosnell's "house of horrors" abortion clinic at links below. What we want to invoke from the Lord is conviction of sin in all their hearts.

Only the Holy Spirit can bring true conviction. And it would be a true blessing, because conviction of sin leads to regeneration and repentance and faith. So please pray with us to that end.

In last Monday's "What's wrong with 'choice'?" we noted the abortion establishment's recent abandonment of the "pro-choice" label, and that it seems to indicate their inability to come to terms with the consequences of choice. That inability results in a stunted vocabulary.

Because advocates refuse to think about abortion as something for which we're answerable to a holy God, they imagine there's nothing to "repent," nothing to be "forgiven." These terms are foreign to them. "Right" and "wrong," "good" and "bad" are, therefore, purely self-oriented. The only question is, "Will abortion help me in my present circumstance?"

They fall into the trap of thinking the experience of sin teaches whether it is, indeed, sin. Their thinking goes something like this: "If, after I've done it, I have negative feelings, it may have been the wrong decision for me at that time. But it may be okay for you, or for me at another time. Who am I to judge?" Abortion decisions are perfect test-cases for the post-modern worldview.

The Bible, however, tells us why we're incapable of recognizing sin or its effects, and why we're never better off  having experienced it. God not only expects us to avoid sin by learning from the experiences of others, but implores us by special revelation to submit solely to His explanation of what sin is and does.

In one enigmatic statement, Jesus told His disciples to be "shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves." This finds its parallel in Jeremiah 4:22, to the negative effect --

My people are foolish, they know Me not;
They are stupid children and have no understanding.
They are shrewd to do evil, but to do good they do not know.

In Romans 16:19, Paul recasts Jesus' words: "I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil." He says it another way in 1 Corinthians 14:20: "Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature."

As we learn in Proverbs, it is possible for the "simple" (young or inexperienced person) to avoid becoming a "fool" or  "scoffer" and instead move on toward "wisdom"  and "maturity" through "prudence" and "understanding." Such terms are sorely lacking in the language of choice.

According to the Bible, how do we become wise and mature? The lesson begins with fearing the Lord, and often is reinforced through rote obedience. We make further progress by rigorously keeping to the well-lit but narrow way and avoiding the paths of violent men and wanton women. How many abortions would have been avoided if the warning of Proverbs 1 had been heeded?

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.
If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood,
Let us ambush the innocent without cause;
Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,
Even whole, as those who go down to the pit;

. . . My son, do not walk in the way with them.
Keep your feet from their path,
For their feet run to evil and they hasten to shed blood.

. . . But they lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own lives.
So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence;
It takes away the life of its possessors.

We do have a choice to make about abortion. Choose now, and choose rightly.
