Our Summit for pregnancy care centers is this month (May 12-13), and the theme is refuge -- as it was for our Sanctity of Human Life Sunday bulletin insert in January and our annual banquet in March. You could say it’s our theme for the whole year.

You also could say it’s one of the major themes of the Bible. If you do a search for “refuge” and related words such as “shelter,” “tower,” and “defense,” you come up with 250 references! And that’s not including other terms such as “fortress,” “strength,” and “rock.”

Many of the passages use these terms to describe the character of God. He is a defender of the weak and a shelter for the oppressed. Over and over in the Psalms, for instance, the psalmist expresses his utter dependence on -- and faith in -- God by saying, “You are my refuge. In You I trust.” It’s wonderful to think of God in this way. No other god has it in its nature to be a refuge (Deut. 32:37-38, Judges 6:31).

Psalm 34:22 is especially precious – “No one who takes refuge in Him will be condemned.” This is the Good News that we apply to our lives and take to those who are hurting after an abortion or struggling with a debilitating condition at the end of life.

One thing we want to express during this “year of refuge” is the idea that those who have taken refuge in God must become like Him in providing safety and strength to others. This is the mission for believers that rings throughout God’s word -- from the cities of refuge instituted in Old Testament law to depictions of the Kingdom of God in the parables of Jesus:

And He said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” Mark 4:30-32

God's kingdom is like a shady place of rest from all our toil and turmoil. May God be praised!
