An estimated 50 million abortions are obtained each year worldwide. How is it that so many arrive at that choice?
A study in 2004 allowed U.S. women to identify reasons for aborting. You can read analysis of that and other research.
These explanations, though, don’t get to the heart of the matter. What are the spiritual reasons for abortion?
God knows the reasons behind every sin, and He’s recorded many of them in the Psalms, which we've paraphrased:
It’s my life! No one can tell me what to do. (2:3, 12:4)
I don’t owe God anything. (10:13)
Nothing bad will happen to me. (10:6)
God isn’t paying attention; He doesn’t know what’s going on. (10:11; 59:7; 64:5; 73:11; 94:7)
God won’t help me. (3:2; 22:8; 71:11)
God can’t help me. (78:19-20)
God is far away and can’t be found (42:3,10; 79:10; 115:2-3)
There is no God. (14:1, 53:1)
These “articles of faith” lead to every sort of sin, not just abortion. While they won’t make it a goal in life to have an abortion, people wind up facing that dilemma because they followed the “creed” and counsel of the ungodly. Looking at life from this worldview, abortion can “make sense” and seem like “the only thing to do.”
Abortion is offered as something that gives people freedom, or keeps them free. Women who lack access to abortion are viewed as oppressed. Yet, the truth is quite the opposite. Abortion is a sin that binds and enslaves, and it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ that sets a person free! (John 8:31-36)
Indeed, abortion is a terrible dilemma, something that many women deeply regret. Being honest with themselves, they admit abortion has more to do with the “deeds of the flesh” than the “fruit of the spirit.” (Galatians 5:1, 13-25)
If abortion begins in the heart (Mark 7:14-23), then its remedy begins there too. Read our new flyer, "Does God forgive the sin of abortion?"
Avoiding abortion requires an alternative belief-system:
- God exists, sees what we do, and will judge our sins.
- Abortion is sin.
- God is powerful and loving enough to help us avoid abortion.
Those of us who want to help people avoid abortion must also exercise faith in God.
