Christians accept many amazing truths on faith:

  • "You are in Christ" (1 Corinthians 1:30)
  • "God has chosen you" (2 Thessalonians 2:13)
  • "You have been saved" (Ephesians 2:8)
  • "The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23)

Another startling truth we must accept is God's declaration that mankind is made in His image, despite many challenges to that idea from nonbelievers. Biblical support for this doctrine is found in Genesis 1:26-27, 5:1-3, and 9:5-6; Psalm 8:3-8; James 3:8-10.

These passages show that mankind continues to be made in God's image even long after the Fall. Unrepentant sinners are made in God's image, so although a person may not behave in a godly or dignified manner, he still has God-given dignity and worth.

And people whose bodies are "broken" by disease or disability also bear His likeness. For example, a person who can do nothing but lie helplessly in a bed still has dignity and inestimable worth because she is made in God's image.

It's also not the moment of birth that confers the sanctity of human life, nor any other milestone of human development. The human being at any age, of any size, in any location, is an image-bearer.

Why is this important? This doctrine is hotly refuted, and that's because it gets in the way of what many people consider to be progress, such as research involving embryos or "death with dignity" involving a physician's assistance or euthanasia.
